A ragtag group of store clerks get stuck working until midnight on Christmas Eve at Xmas-O-Rama, a shabby Christmas shop in a blue-collar New Jersey town. The store is run by Mike Malcolm, a shady, degenerate gambler whose debts suddenly catch up with him in the form of two thugs who have come to collect what they are owed. Mike flees to the nearest card game to try and win enough money to keep his "creditors" from breaking his legs or worse. Alone in the store on this busy night of quirky last minute shoppers, the diverse, mostly non-Christian employees struggle with their "outsider" relationship to Christmas. While waiting for Mike's return, and more importantly their paychecks, the eccentric group reveal their individual religious pride, misunderstanding, jealousy and secret love for the spirit of ever-present Christmas. A single mother looses her job and travels home to spend Thanksgiving with her family all on the same day.
Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 30-JUL-2002
Media Type: DVDHolly Hunter plays a Chicago-based single mom who--on the day before Thanksgiving--loses her job and is informed by her daughter of the latter's intention to surrender her virginity while on a weekend-long affair. If that's not enough, Hunter's character then has to fly to Baltimore to join her fractious family for another difficult Thanksgiving. Robert Downey Jr. is terrifically charming as her prankish, gay brother, and Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning show plenty of comic resilience during the predictably interesting Thanksgiving dinner scene. The script by W.D. Richter (Brubaker) avoids the usual clichés in family dramas--the deepest, darkest secret revealed here involves the painfully sweet revelation of a 40-year-old crush. Jodie Foster, directing her second feature, focuses instead on the inevitable softening of old grudges and disappointments with time. This is a wise as well as wonderfully fun movie. --Tom Keogh Read more
Leslie Nielsen tones down the bumbling for Santa Who?, but wearing a belly like a bowl full of jelly does little to diminish his trademark dimwittedness, which is what gets the bells ringing on this Saint Nick flick. Peter Albright, a self-involved TV reporter, can't believe his luck when Santa, presumably the for-hire variety, sails into his windshield and gets amnesia. What a story! When his search for Santa's family stops short at the North Pole, his humbug infestation subsides, setting him free to make merry. Predictability aside, Santa Who? drags a sleigh full of better-than-average shenanigans into living rooms, making this a winter-evening warmer worth skipping Rudolph repeats for. The made-for-TV movie is produced by Disney. --Tammy La Gorce Read more
Following a tragic plane crash, newspaper columnist Peyton MacGruder discovers a note that was from one of the passengers onboard. She sets on a quest to find the person for whom it was intended, and discovers the life it will change is her own.The Note is vaguely reminiscent of the 1999 Kevin Costner film Message in a Bottle--in which a newspaper reporter finds a letter in a bottle and tracks down the author. In this movie, newspaper columnist Peyton Macgruder (Genie Francis) discovers a note that appears to have been written by a father to his child just minutes before his plane crashed. Peyton--who lost her own husband in tragic accident--is compelled to figure out who the letter was intended for and deliver it to that person. Floundering at work and unable to find true love, she figures she has nothing to lose. Peyton is the kind of heroine who appears the most comfortable when she is experiencing a bit of misery. As she writes about her progress, she is surprised that her nearly-canceled column is now attracting national attention; readers turn to her column hoping to learn for the identity of the note's recipient. The movie (which was Hallmark's No. 1 rated picture for 2007) is designed to tug at viewers' heartstrings and Francis is more than up to the task to achieve this goal. After spending years owning the character of Laura Spencer on General Hospital, Francis eases into the role, making Peyton believable even in unbelievable situations. Ted McGinley (Married with Children) does a nice, understated job as her colleague and potential love interest. Based on the novel by Angela Hunt, the film is faithful to the film's core. It ends as it should--on a positive (albeit expected) note--with our plucky heroine rediscovering how to love and forgive herself as much as she does others. --Jae-Ha Kim Read more

Christmas isn't coming early, late, or at all for the bitterly divorced Jack Cameron. This modern-day Scrooge hates Santa and any soul who loves Christmas. Jack gets a Christmas wake-up call from the Ghost of Christmas Past, who suddenly decides to take a vacation, leaving Jack in the past. Now Jack must team up with the gorgeous Ghost of Christmas Present to save the future of Christmas.A clever twist on the classic story A Christmas Carol, Chasing Christmas finds its Scrooge in the bitter Jack Cameron (Tom Arnold, Happy Endings), whose wife cheated on him during their daughter's performance in a Christmas pageant and now he does mean things like throw Christmas decorations in the street. Naturally, he becomes the target for the Bureau of Yuletide affairs, who send the Ghost of Christmas Past (Leslie Jordan, Will & Grace) to take Cameron on a tour of his previous holidays. But when the ghost has a personal meltdown and abandons Cameron in 1965, the lovely Ghost of Christmas Present (Andrea Roth, Rescue Me) has to rescue the sourpuss--only to find that romantic sparks arise twixt ghost and man. Chasing Christmas won't win any awards, but it's a modest, enjoyable movie with a theme everyone can agree on: Life must be embraced to be fully lived. Tom Arnold isn't the most charismatic actor, but he has his talents; Roth and Brittney Wilson (Dinosapien) as Cameron's daughter are charming; and the story clips along at a sprightly pace. --Bret Fetzer Read more

Studio: Genius Products Inc Release Date: 09/16/2003 Run time: 85 minutes Rating: NrSanta Claus Is Comin' To Town
This 53-minute, 1970 animated film may be the most delightful of those sundry, stop-motion animated Christmas perennials that show up on television during the holidays. The clay animation production, boasting a wonderful musical score and art direction that occasionally underscores the flower-power era in which it was born, tells the story of Santa's origins, in which Kris Kringle decides to get toys into the hands of poor children in gloomy Sombertown. Charmingly narrated by Fred Astaire and featuring voices by Mickey Rooney and Keenan Wynn, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town presents a nice bridge between two generations of entertainment, the classic and the hip. --Tom Keogh
The Little Drummer Boy
The model animation techniques in this 1968 Rankin and Bass TV chestnut are primitive by today's standards, and picky kids may reject them out of hand. The story, however, which elaborates on the popular Christmas song about a shepherd boy who plays his drum for the baby Jesus and makes the animals dance, is a little more tough-minded than you might expect. The kid begins the story as what we'd now call a neglected child, a surly urchin who says he hates all people. He's pulled back from the brink, first by learning to make music, and then by his encounter with the Christ child. The underlying message alone--that everybody has something worth contributing--qualifies the show for holiday-perennial status. The big-name voice performers, Jose Ferrer and Greer Garson (who narrates), may be a little too ponderous for the occasion, but the familiar cartoony tones of Paul Frees (aka Boris Badenov) and June Forey (aka Rocket J. Squirrel) help liven up the proceedings. It's only 23 minutes long, so it's worth a shot for younger children. --David Chute Read more
